How to Keep Your Eyewear Fog-Free This Winter

preventing foggy glasses

With Fall disappearing before our eyes and Winter fast-approaching, there is nothing more inconvenient than dealing with the increasing frequency of foggy lenses. From driving your car to work to going for a stress-busting run, when your glasses fog up, navigating your everyday life is just harder. Which begs the question: What causes your glasses to fog up and are there any ways to prevent it from happening?

There are several reasons eyewear tends to fog up. However, the two largest contributing factors are ambient heat and humidity. Ambient heat, better known as the temperature, causes fog when you rapidly go from a place that is warm to a place that is cold or vice versa. Humidity is when water vapor exists in the air and can easily fog up your lenses when the water particles attach themselves during your time outdoors.

So, what can you do? Here are several simple, yet effective ways to ward off this frustrating eyewear fog:

Anti-Fog Wipes or Sprays

Perhaps the simplest and easiest method is anti-fog wipes. Though they aren’t known to be long lasting, using one wipe each day on your lenses should be enough to ward off light fog. Shaving Foam/Shaving Cream

Mhm, you read that right. Good old shaving cream is an excellent moisture repellent. Working on anything from windshields to glasses, shaving cream is known for creating a protective barrier that protects glass from fogging up. All you need to do is use a dab of it on your lenses, rub across your glasses with a dry towel, and wipe down. No water needed and you’re good to go!

Anti-Fog Coating

According to New Scientist, anti-fog coatings are extremely hydrophilic, or water-attractive. Counterintuitively, they work by essentially operating as a water magnet, drawing water particles across the surface to create an extremely thin barrier. This spreading effect is continuous and means whenever water hits your lenses, it instantly spreads into this layer that is invisible to your eyes.

You wear glasses to help you see more effectively and with these helpful anti-fog tips, you will be prepared for the rain, cold or snow! For more tips on keeping your glasses clean and clear, check out How to Heal Scratched Lenses and 3 Tips for Cleaning Glasses.
